Although rarely discussed or acknowledged, animal agriculture is responsible for 51% of greenhouse gas emissions.
Replacing livestock products with soy-based and other alternatives is the best strategy for reversing climate change. This approach would have far more rapid effects on GHG emissions and on the rate the climate is warming than actions to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy.
On September 20, 2014, Climate Change 911 board member, Julia Orr, organized a 51% demo as part the People's Climate March, Los Angeles - Building Blocks Against Climate Change, to share information regarding the massive and catastrophic impact that animal farming has on the environment. Activists wore shirts with 51% and did outreach to other march participants and community members. View pics of the event here:
